"eating me alive inside"
We have all had the proverbial butterflies in the stomach but so called, Cocaine Butterflies, I can't even imagine. The term (as a song title) comes from the creative mind of singer-songwriter, musician Keelah Tay, "I started developing this idea of flipping the feeling of when someone you love gives you giddy butterflies but instead its more like psychosis butterflies".
The indie alt R&B track with sharp keyboard strikes, a heavy dominant drum beat with serious fills, a cooly dangerous bass line and a very psychedelic kind of spring reverbed electric guitar serve as the musical bed that Keelah's vocal performance lies down in. The vocal aesthetic here feels inward, pained and soulful. Cocaine Butterflies stirs out of a torn, one sided relationship exacerbated by Keelah's addiction to stimulants (at the time). It sounds heavy and best loud with a bass boost.

FROM Keelah Tay:
Three key life experiences really shaped the creation of this song.
At the time I was in a tumultuous relationship that had turned one sided. We were also band mates which is always a lethal combination but despite all the warning signs we went forward. He was one foot out the door around this time but I was still foolishly hoping we could turn it around.
I was also taking a songwriting class which wasn’t going well. It was near the final and none of the songs I presented up to that point were well received by the class. Which was really hard for me because I’m very sensitive lol but it made me very determined to get my final song right. I started developing this idea of flipping the feeling of when someone you love gives you giddy butterflies but instead its more like psychosis butterflies lol.
On top of all this I was knee deep in my drug addiction. Mostly Stimulants. I still struggle with this today.
The determination and desperation of these experiences with out a doubt created this song.
