Coming off the heels of Drift (rom the Pacific Rim Soundtrack) with RZA of Wu Tang Clan, singer/ songwriter Blake Perlman puts her own distinctive imprint on any musical endeavor she touches. Her 7 track "Out of Lines" EP is scheduled to drop early in 2014. The recent release of the Chameleon video and the track Loser back in October are the first glimpses of Out of Lines which blends elements of dark-wave, trip hop and electronic music into a rather cinematic sound scape. Using heavy synth beds and dissonant drones like on the hypnotic Faces, or World / Mid-East rhythms like the shape shifting Principesa, Blake hooks you into the atmosphere (which often times feels like some dark dystopian future) beckoning you to follow her voice that can carry sadness, longing and a sense of whimsy all at the same time. Vocally, Blake is an original with a wonderful awareness of her instrument but artists like Austra, Tori Amos, Chvrches' Lauren Mayberry, the iconic Kate Bush and Natasha Khan come to mind. I will be reviewing her EP when her release date draws near but for now check out her Chameleon video and the link to Loser.
