"King of Nothing" from Magon's album "Out In The Dark" is more underground than it feels

AP Track Review / Album Overview

King of Nothing from Magon's full length "Out In The Dark" is an indie rock track with a splash of a drunk smile on it's face. The chill cadence and sweet storyteller vibe vox made me think a bit of the Babies, Kevin Morby with a foggy presence of a Lou Reed vibe. The result is more underground punk than it feels on the surface. Yes, the drunken smile that holds complexities in the gut. The whole album is bathed in a sort of dream scape of looking at your life from a distance, of the feeling of detachment highlighted by dissonant guitar. I feel iconic sounds too as homages or simple inspirations or same musical DNA. God, I feel a Pixies vibe on the tracks Song For Nimrod, Same House and My Reflection. The title lap smacked track, Out In The DarkIt's Love and In The Library spins backward like the Velvet Underground. Third Dimensional Love dips it's toe a bit into Thee Oh Sees vibe. And I feel Joey Santiago's inspired guitar aesthetic throughout. Magon's sound on "Out In The Dark" pulls punk and proto punk passions front and center with lyrical content that has the depth of heavy dreams. Listen to the album and a dumb smile might appear on your face just because these sound feel new and shiny but comfortable like a fond remembrance too.

THE FACTS AS WE KNOW THEM - PRESS NOTES:

“Mid 70’s rock’n’roll was the birth of chaos, counter-culture and the fall of innocence. The entrance to an era of nothingness, where the focus went from significance to ‘fuck all’. Perpetuating this legacy, Magon is the “King of Nothing”, as suggested by the opening track. Magon has now found the path of salvation and it is through this new record that he reveals his new face.

Originally from Tel Aviv and initially the second half of the pop-duo Charlotte and Magon, the musician has decided to go it alone with his new project Out In The Dark. This self-produced debut album is a combination of fierce dynamism and gawky emotional confessions with psychedelic pop.

Beneath adolescent posturing, Magon is often nakedly emotional, pleading for a lover on “Thinking of You” or “It’s love”. But that does not prevent him from meditating in his inner heart and romanticizing his nocturnal wanderings on “The Streets”. This is exactly why Magon’s persona is so fascinating.”- Savage Thrills
