Collin Selman's new sounds on "tANGERINE" feels dark but light around the edges
AP Track Review
Collin Selman is a young Central Texas singer-songwriter who seems to be reaching for new sounds and aesthetics with each release which is refreshing. On his latest, tANGERINE he goes for a sort of askew sound and maybe the lower case t of the song is the first indication that this seemingly acoustic based alt folk song would be a divergent one. Selman possesses a voice that is beautifully poised and maybe searching. I get the sense that maybe he has not fully flushed out the character of his style which is also refreshing. Drones of sound, synths and effected washed out voices step in like an opera chorus stepping out from behind the curtain only to withdraw. When the full effected wash takes over the song is beautifully haunting but not a full surprise and that is ok. I think Selman has surprises yet to come.
