The brilliance of YLMD by HUSSY

AP Track Review

The brilliance of the track YLMD by Hussy (UK, South London) is that upon first listen it instantly pulls you in by the shirt collars. It, in fact, feels comfortable in it's utter catchiness like you may of heard it before. It has this lost radio transmission character but doesn't sound like another song or a copy-cat of something else. Therein lies it's shiny brilliance because it feels instantly like an indie post punk classic. Like a song you missed from maybe the 90's or maybe from just yesterday. A lot of the allure has to do with the song itself, it's cadence and it's quiet loud sound and, a hell of a lot of it, has to do with Hussy's (multi-instrumentalist, Sophie Nicole Ellison's) vocal / artistic aesthetic. Her voice is imbued with a sort of punk ambivalence, a sort of 'I'm going to say what I want to say but I don't give a fuck if you listen'. The song is a whirlwind of soaring crescendos and quieter indie rock / new wave-isms and the bounce of Ellison's melody have the perfect post punk swing. Brilliant, like I said.

THE FACTS AS WE KNOW THEM - PRESS NOTES:

South London based HUSSY (multi instrumentalist, Sophie Nicole Ellison) makes music that’s both juxtaposingly lullful & playful yet as raw and direct as the name of her pseudonym.
A multi-instrumentalist, she plays, records and layers all instrumentation herself as home recorded collages before polishing the recordings into fully produced versions in her home studio.
"Katie and Allison Crutchfield. Mitski. Sadie Dupuis. Leah Wellbaum. These are just some of the best female singer-songwriters in the business, and they have the ability to turn life’s frenzied events into remarkable music. Across, a young woman from London seeks to join this exclusive club, and her name is Sophie Nicole Ellison, who goes by the stage name Hussy. " - The Revue (2018)
"Hussy is the moniker of South London's finest new dream pop pioneer Sophie Nicole Ellison. Hussy is an artist who is wholly in control of her craft and creates every part of the music on her own. She's about to become your favorite new dream-pop artist". - The Line of Best Fit (2018)
"HUSSY is the project of SE London-based Sophie Nicole Ellison, and new song ‘Slayer’, one half of a new AA-side alongside ‘Playtime’, is a brilliant indie rock song that has the closeness and intimacy of bedroom pop, but with ambition that reaches far outside its walls. " - DIY Magazine (2018)
"A husky, dark, brooding number from London’s Hussy. Gritty lo-fi guitars carry the song, before suddenly the tone shifts, clouds dispersing, with a dreamy, hypnotic chorus. The subtle vocals sink low into the track, but at key moments bring it to life, creating an ever-shifting, entertaining listen." - Bristol In Stereo (2018)
