Vega Maestro and the art rock, power pop mania of "The Curriculum"

On the Roof

Vega Maestro hail from Denver, Colorado and while they may or may not be more than a duo, at their core are two creatively insane songwriters named Flip Flop and Karate Chop. No, I am not kidding and while I doubt that those are their birth names (oh, how I wish they were) they make some trippy sounds and just released an 8 track album called "Hello Voyeur" full of, hmmmmmm?? (I am thinking) sort of purposeful lo-fi art rock (or art punk) extravaganzas really, some combining recordings of people of note talking, many with big sweeping big rock crescendos that fall away to more sweet sounds. Even tracks like Prancer and Bombardier that almost have a emo-esque folk core and Stack Your Garbage that feels like sadcore (folk) are pushed through such avant garde filters, they become something way more odd and experimental.

The song The Curriculum recorded in Nashville features an interview of Ram Dass (R.I.P) conducted by Terence Mckenna, as well as a Ram Dass solo lecture. He in fact sort of introduced the song. The vibrant style feels like proggy power pop twisted with sock hop punk and further drenched with a psychedelia. The vox, dynamic, poised with a kind of sweeping cabaret provocateur tone and dressed up with falsettos (I thought of Sparks a bit actually) is cut up by killer guitar likes that feel so glam and art punkish as well as crazy stabs of synth sounds. The musical breaks are absolutely stirring and powerful and damn, thinking of Sparks again as well as some other bands ( Man Man, Smile,The Stranglers ). Incredibly impressed at the mania here.

from the artist:

This song was recorded in Nashville, TN. It features samples from an interview of Ram Dass conducted by Terence Mckenna, as well as a Ram Dass solo lecture. We smashed a lot of empty liquor bottles for this one. This track is on our new album, Hello Voyeur.
