"need you like a nightmare"
Lodestone by the experimental synthwave outfit, Modeling, is a surprising piece of music. When it begins it feels like a dark and audacious piece of horror soundtrack and the movie would be (in my fertile mind) something weird like as in HP. Lovecraf-tian and maybe starring a half naked Nicolas Cage just being his crazy over acting self but then the song shape shifts. Vocals come in with a pretty pop forward (commercially so) melody. It is romantic and youthful and while still dark even mines some (respectfully) derivative pop sounds that could even be associated with boy band stuff. I don't say this to be disparaging. What makes it work is the odd juxtaposition of these two genres, these two soundscapes. Interesting stuff and so well done. The blend of styles, the layers of voices feel very engaging and dreamy.

Now, me personally, would suggest listening to Lodestone by itself to see the images that pop up in your mind but I offer their "visual blog" as well.
A Love Song Lost in a 1980’s Horror Film
"Lodestone" is a song about two people who fell in love and fell out of it. The music parallels the beginning, middle and end of a very specific relationship. Chaotic, dramatic and intense in the beginning, but then transforms into something very dreamlike and isolated, ignoring all the noise that came before. It’s much like when you fall in love and you forget what’s going on around you. The outside world doesn’t exist because you’re solely focused on this one thing. It’s like having tunnel vision. But then at some point the dream ends and you have to come back to reality. The track pulls influences from films such as It Follows, Blade Runner, and Drive. Being a visually-driven band, Modeling also created a fictional world where “Lodestone” could live using photographs and moving images to help guide the aesthetic, structure and sound of the song. To bring this world to life, they've compiled all of these images into a visual blog for others to inhabit with them.
