"till the sun and dusk must fall"
When you hear Five Years Old by Brighton (UK) based Night House you might think of old school folk (even country) transmitted from the late 60's on a static tube televison on a variety show when they used to infuse chamber pop and American musical theatre with folk. The idea was to dress up the roots music up with a certain level of culture and art and make it more palatable to the white collar strata of Americana. Think Glen Campbell with pressed pants, a suit coat and a beautifully styled hair doing his thing on TV.
Night House infuse this sort of loveliness in their sound but for different reasons (I imagine). Their pure style of story telling is drenched with tenderness and supported by that same kind of sound (American Songbook) with lovely nimble musicality and even more nimble emotional tones embodied in Nick Williams' pristine vocals. The nuances are many amid the elegant orchestration even the pretty slides of what sounds like a stand up bass is produced with a sense of grace and purity. Yes, lovely is the best single word to describe what I am hearing.
Five years old is the third single taken from "Everyone Is Watching From Afar". It was mixed by Dan Brown (Massive Attack, Jerry Williams) and mastered by Pete Maher (U2, The Pixies).

“…reference points could include everyone from Bon Iver to James Blake, alongside Brian Eno's more ambient works.” - Clash
Brighton-based Night House are delighted to announce the release of their spellbinding debut album, Everyone Is Watching From Afar, out on 27th March 2020 via Back in The Woods Records.
Blending electronic beats, orchestral arrangements and lyric-driven song-writing, Night House has a sound that is almost spiritual; beautiful, uplifting ethereal harmonies meld with modern electronica to create a warm, intelligent sound that is reminiscent of Björk and Wild Beasts, with lead singer Nicholas Williams aptly described by Radio Reverb as a “falsetto Tom Waits”.
The collective draw from a wide range of influences marrying the electronic work the likes of which James Blake and Radiohead are renowned for, with the folk harmonies of Sufjan Stevens, Joni Mitchell, and Bon Iver. Co-produced and mixed by Dan Brown (Massive Attack, Jerry Williams, Luca), the record was written during a period of family bereavement with the personal lyrics drifting over warm strings and clarinets, where layered vocal harmonies meet icy synthesizers and electronic beats. The unique album features performances from a range of Brighton artists, including the lead vocals and harp of acclaimed songwriter Ellie Ford on “The Roots in the Wires”.
The band have gained recognition throughout the past 12 months having released several singles from the forthcoming album. Night House have picked up support from tastemakers such as M-Magazine (PRS for Music), Clash Magazine, BBC Radio, The Vinyl District and Come Here Floyd, as well as videos premiering on Attitude Magazine and God is in the TV.
Night House have supported many artists including Ben Howard, Willy Mason, Solomon Grey, Krystle Warren and The Magic Numbers. Road testing the material for Everyone Is Watching From Afar took the band on four European tours, including headline shows upstairs at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club as well as sell out home town shows at Brighton’s St Nicholas and Unitarian churches. They've performed at many festivals including at The Great Escape, Rhythm Tree, The Isle of Wight and Ynot.
