Joe Vann and the different emotional elevations of "Shuffle Around"

"the city's a cage when you're not around"

Joe Vann is based out of NYC where he writes and recorded his upcoming solo album in his apartment. His childhood was vastly different. He grew up in a trailer without electricity on 40 acres right outside Yosemite National Park in California's Sierra Nevada mountains. I don't know any more details about that life, his life and how off the grid it was but Joe Vann ( the musical moniker of Joey Vannucchi) does reveal that his unusual childhood informs his songwriting. 

His track Shuffle Around is dreamy and quilted with sadness. It floats at different emotional elevations on Vannucchi's ultra beautiful vocal aesthetic that is anchored in urgent passages and a vocal character that feels so incredibly earnest. Upfront moving guitars create the framework for that voice and while the production is spartan, it doesn't feel like it because it is so emotionally dense. Beautiful stuff.
