Pillow Queen's jammy rocking and passionate wails on "Handsome Wife" (Official Video)

The Official Video for Ireland's Pillow Queen's jamming indie rocker Handsome Wife (as directed and edited by Kate Dolan) begins with words explaining the quarantine nature of the video: "This Video was made in isolation with the help of friends, family & strangers. It is a love letter to touch and all the ways we miss the closeness of others right now." It is a bit of a heart melting beginning and the video is lovely but as I often do, while listening to music, I closed my eyes a ways in and could feel the passion and love within the song brimming over.

Handsome Wife with it's droning sounds and runaway beat that gives way to blistering guitar jabs, is a dreamy super potent track. It moves like riding on rails or speeding in cars and conjures up images of the past, your own remembrances might fill your head. Pamela Connolly's lead vox are beautifully rendered, gritty and full of passion. She can wail and the band can rock in a big way and for whatever reason, as I listened, I felt a kind of blue collar rock vibe and thought of bands like Big Country and Springsteen at the same time. I know that is so weird but I throw it out there just the same. Amazing track. I have been so impressed with Pillow Queens in the past as I have run into their awesome live performances on YouTube but need to dive more fully into their songs.

Pillow Queens are: Pamela Connolly (Vocals, guitar, bass), Sarah Corcoran (Vocals, guitar, bass), Rachel Lyons (Drums, vocals) and Cathy McGuinness (Lead guitar, vocals)

When Pillow Queens announced themselves in late 2019 with the soaring single "Brothers", their bruising interpretation of mourning for a lost loved one immediately caught widespread attention. Channeling wrought emotion through a sea of 90s grunge and indie-rock sounds, the Irish four-piece (from Dublin, Wicklow and Kildare) forge a powerful noise that is all their own – but meant for everyone. Pillow Queens offer a cathartic experience filled with camaraderie and solidarity.

New single "Handsome Wife" premieres as Clash Magazine's Track of The Day, who comment: "It's a phenomenal return, with its grunge-leaning guitar line putting us in mind of Yuck, while there are even the odd Americana inflection in amongst the band's torn 'n' tattered indie rock."

Inclusivity, choice, and togetherness are just some words that chime loudly with Pillow Queens, and today’s new single "Handsome Wife" arrives at a time when those words have rarely had more impact. In a physically, and morally, divided world "Handsome Wife" looks at the importance of life’s often underappreciated moments, as the band explains: “Handsome Wife begins with a glimpse into an emotional homecoming, one that intensifies and romanticises the seemingly insignificant. Throughout, the mundane but tender moments are held up and deified, paying reverence to the ease in which a love can thrive outside the realms of tradition. The song continuously references structures and rituals that were once out of reach, but are now within our grasp. In spite of this Handsome Wife affirms that they pale in comparison to the communities we’ve built ourselves.”
