Patti Corduroy and the hybrid R&B indie neo soul wave of "Pretty Girl"
"let him know what you're wearing under there"
Oscar Wilde said, "Give a man a mask and he will tell you the truth." (I learned that from Bad Flamingo) so maybe, if two highly talented creatives give themselves a name, let's say, like Patti Corduroy then they can be utterly free to sound anyway they want to. That seems to be the case with UK musicians Robin Mullarkey and Emma Smith who have spent years together touring and recording with the likes of Sia, Laura Mvula, Zero7, Goldie, Seal, Jacob Collier, Jessie Ware and many more.
As Patti Corduroy they illicit these kinds of words:
“ Patti Corduroy is a project that’s perfect for our genre-less times, their massive melodies and gargantuan grooves conceal the ingenious, mind-warping musicianship within. In essence, this is the sound of liberated future-soul-jazz turned up to eleven”
Mike Flynn, Editor - Jazzwise
Take their track, Pretty Girl, that is as time warped 50's cool as it is late 80's soulful and 2020 R&B indie elegant. This hybrid cross generational, genre agnostic sensibility makes it timeless. I know that is a cliche thing to say but it is not an exaggeration here. The jazz overtures (listen to that bass), electro pop washed patina and street made bounce feels like everything because it is. Vocally, Emma Smith possesses a heady, exquisite command of her instrument and I love the wee bits of her Brit accent revealing itself. Yeah, this is beautiful stuff.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Patti Corduroy, the twisted brainchild of musicians Robin Mullarkey and Emma Smith. The duo are real life friends and survivors of London’s brutal session scene and have been playing together on the world stage for years. Having toured and recorded with artists such as Sia, Laura Mvula, Zero7, Goldie, Seal, Jacob Collier and Jessie Ware (to name a few), they have the credentials and the experience that make them world-class musicians, yet their new band, ‘Patti Corduroy’, has a sense of humour and a magical spark that can only be created by two people really loving what they are doing.
After the success of their first release ‘Never Before’, which was premiered on Tony Minvielle's Jazz Fm show 'Folded space', Patti Corduroy set the boujeeness level to 10 for their new single and jam out on a summer r&b chill out groove. the signature in-your-face-voice-and-bass melt into a blissed out sound bath, produced by robin. The lyric is a 'tongue-in-cheek-but-still-a-bit-serious' comment on vapid WAG culture, inspired by the lyrics to Amy Winehouse tune 'F*** Me Pumps". 'Pretty Girl' is an immersive experience, story + music, created to transport the listener into the most deliciously relaxed state of sonic indulgence.
Should be served in the summer with ice cold drinks & unbuttoned linen shirts.
