The National Anthem's soaring dark folk indie "Icarus" from the upcoming "13 Songs" album

"do I follow her, does she follow me"

The National Anthem is the self-described "Lockdown side project. Pianos, cellos and Misery" of songwriter, musician, Irish techie, Sean Murphy living in London and the track Icarus has wonderful deep piano chords that do create lake pool reflections of Radiohead but not in an overt way. I mean, Murphy's, love of the band must be a solid one considering the name of his music project (as 'The National Anthem' is, of course, a track from the band's 2000 Kid A album) but that is totally fair. Radiohead, after all, took their moniker from Talking Heads' track 'Radio Head' from their 1986 album "True Stories".

Murphy's aesthetic might feel less pedantic than that of the of the Abingdon, Oxfordshire boys with storytelling that feels more earth bound even though you can feel a mythology here too. When a lovely female lilt reinforces the steely eyed sadness and power punch rock affections crescendo with guitars and drums there is a heavy post garden rock ascension that is moving and powerful. But in those lake pool reflections and in the end, all of Icarus has power within it's ever so sad, brooding grip.

The National Anthem's "13 Songs" Album will be released in August. 'Icarus' is the single.
