VAZUM's nuanced deathrock tone over alt rock / Goth / metal underpinnings on "Captive Heart" feels inviting

"bow down and keep the peace"

VAZUM is an alternative rock / goth metal band based in Detroit They stir in deathrock and shoegaze into the mix as well but (to me) in a nuanced way. Their latest track Captive Heart from their recently released full length "Vampyre Villa" has a Goth Pop icy fog over the alt rock heaviness. The bass / drum bottom here is furiously cool and punchy. The layers of guitar notes (and it feels like many) mid neck and higher create this dinge of sound that create tension as lower guitar lines exist in that Goth pop rock / surf punk place feeling so dark like black nail polish. I find the vocal melody to be so well placed and interesting, stabs of words in a patterned way over double timed guitar notes feels hypnotic and pulls you into the song even more. I did think of other iconic artists while listening but not in a sound alike sort of way but more so in an atmospheric sense. The multi teared Goth pop of the Cure (circa 1989), Smashing Pumpkins (circa 1995), Interpol (circa 2002).

About Captive Heart, Pliska (songwriter) says:

"This song was a demo I made a few years ago. Part of the guitar line had a Radiohead vibe I liked. When selecting songs for Vampyre Villa, this was on the list to record. Lyrically it's about being in the throes of enchantment and unable to break free."

Vampyre Villa, the newest album from Detroit-based deathgaze band VAZUM was recorded exclusively in their home studio. They then fine-tuned and finished it during the beginning of the 2020 quarantine. This album features the addition of vocalist/bassist Emily Sturm to the lineup. She has helped expand the sound, look, and aesthetic of the band to create an uncompromised and unique offering. VAZUM was formed in 2017 by vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Zach Pliska. Past work includes two albums released in 2018 and one album in 2019. Recorded and mixed by Zach Pliska, Vampyre Villa is the most fully envisioned album from VAZUM, combining classic gothic and deathrock roots with the depth of shoegaze.
