Color Tongue dance, fly, strike poses, and bow on the art rock blunderbuss of "Worry Wart"

"but that's alright I think I'll go"

The track, "Worry Wart" from Bushwick, Brooklyn NY psych-rock quartet Color Tongue's brand new EP of the same name swims in dreamy pools of psychedelic and stirred up ambience. The vocal aesthetic feels extremely high, on what I don't know, but I couldn't help but think of a hyper realistic images of the band walking down the yellow brick road and running through poppy fields with eyes that don't blink. The prettiness here that feels as embraceable as cute stuffed animal belie the lyrics that may involve dead rats in apartment walls, "I... I yai yai, don't want to be alone inside my head cuz the flies...they fly yai yai ayi and they zoom around my room until they're dead".

The band's hectic, somewhat chaotic live style informs the entire EP:

"We've been working on this album for about two years. It's a very personal record that we're stoked on. A constant theme on this record is having to make decisions and getting hung up on it and facing the realities of getting older and the consequences of your actions carrying more weight. There were dead rats in the walls of our apartment. Like something straight out of a horror film, maggots started crawling out and falling from the ceiling. Inevitably they turned into flies whipped around our humble abode. They'd go in and out of my room constantly. I was dealing with some stuff at the time and already was having a lot of trouble sleeping unless I was stoned or whatever. I felt pretty out of sorts for a few months and kept feeling a lot of anxiety and was trying to tune everything out while still being present for what was happening around me."

"Worry Wart" (the EP) percolates with so many unique sounds. Tracks like Pillows! and Garden have such a manic sense. Guitar lines striking out left and running tom tom drums bursting top right, keys all over the place and vocals every which way. The songs can feel like they are playing hide and seek with themselves as in Confetti Cannon. As I perused random songs, I had a sense of a brilliant, whimsical fusing of Man Man, Sparks, Modest Mouse, Silver Sun Pickups and the Who... seriously.

Fuck yeah.

Color Tongue, a psych-rock quartet from Bushwick, live in a busy apartment with twice as many paintings on the walls than windows, a carousel of half finished art projects, with beds. The band’s chaotic musical style is a clear reflection of the hectic environment in which they live.
