Glen Echo's engaging psychedelic trip “L’appel du Vide” washes over you

"here we sit like a thousand times before"

The debut single “L’appel du Vide” by Glen Echo, the musical project of Camden Moser (Los Angeles based graphic artist, musician and tour manager) filters in slowly like a fog rolling in. It's easy, yet dreamy narrative from the onset makes it feel cinematic, speculative and might make you see images in your mind. During the pandemic we might all be watching too much Netflix and “L’appel du Vide” feels like a perfect soundscape for a sizzling, divergent thematic series of the same name. Moser's vocal aesthetic is pristine and beautiful in it's sustains and ability to transmit emotional cues, highs and lows. The lovely things happening here from a kind of 70's psyche rock motif (the wonderful bass line and pearly picking guitars actually made me think of Pink Floyd), to more current pop indie sounds is utterly dreamy but holds catharsis about his life's journey as press notes indicate:

[L’appel du Vide, French for “the call of the void,” follows the development of a returned depression. While writing the song, Camden details his departure from the tech industry in pursuit of a more fulfilling life. The comfort of the modern office, however predictable and stable, was never his intention. He received an offer to jump back into music and quit his job the same day, releasing unprecedented feelings of freedom and fear.]

[Glen Echo cites inspiration from Spiritualized, Nick Hakim and Boards of Canada - seminal figures in his musical upbringing. His experience as an art school student, favoring impressionist mixed-media, encouraged his interest in abstracting his songs' conceptual themes. More can be learned about Glen Echo’s creative process from his 2018 TED talk.]

This is my first introduction to Glen Echo and Moser has captivated me here. This is the kind of song that added to a playlist would put the brakes on it but in a good way. That is because it is a no bullshit song, it's own thing, just simple artistic truth free of indie tropes (like megaphone vox or a trap beat just for the sake of having a trap beat). In that way, it is pure.

Mind drippings from the Echo Chamber

Camden Moser is a graphic artist, musician and tour manager living in Los Angeles. His entrance into the music industry came through tours with country artists in Nashville, before moving to Los Angeles to pursue a seat in the psychedelic scene. Prior to the release of Glen Echo, he was managing tours for Interscope’s Role Model and RCA’s Christian French. During his time away from touring, he began writing music as a means to organize his thoughts and reprieve from an abusive relationship. GLAMBIEN, his debut EP, follows the demise of a long-term relationship leaving him to spend several months with his family in Ohio. GLAMBIEN, a five-song EP, will be released in the form of 5 singles over the course of 3 months.
