Lespectre's sad falling dream of "Obliquely Serenely" from their "A Stray, A Dream, Forgiveness" debut album

'Obliquely Serenely' is the perfect name for Bristol based dream pop outfit Lespectre because it is both serene and oblique and 'Obliquely Deeply Beautiful Serenely' would be too long and, quite frankly, feel a bit arrogant (wouldn't it). But it is all those things. The multi-colored fluid track is the second single taken from Lespectre's debut album "A Stray, A Dream, Forgiveness", due to drop on October 16th of this year.

The falling chord progression, terribly sad bass line is invaded by stabs of synths, spartan guitar and a contemplative drum beat. Tom Hackwell's vocal aesthetic is pushed in a mournful moving way and the refrain bolstered by his Moog Sounds and a mirroring sort of surf punk / spaghetti western guitar line does feel askew but sadly beautiful, oblique and serene.

Recorded at the iconic Coach House studio, where Massive Attack and Portishead recorded some of the city's most famous records, this is a new Bristol sound; the song's chimerical lyrics are a stream of consciousness, crafted by Hackwell and co-songwriter and drummer Max Perry.

Lespectre are an atmospheric dream-pop band from Bristol. The five-piece began life as an experiment in songwriting for Tom Hackwell (guitar, vocals) and Max Perry (drums) – a vague attempt at creating something phonically reminiscent of the dream-like verse of Clarice Lispector (the name ‘Lespectre’ is an homage to the work of the Brazilian writer).

The full band took shape with the addition of Becky Leach (vocals, keys, violin), Gary Walker (guitar) and Sam Winter-Quick (vocals, bass). The illusionary, atmospheric shoegaze sound of Lespectre was born.

Fans of Cocteau Twins, Lanterns On The Lake, Cigarettes After Sex, Mazzy Star, The National, Phoebe Bridgers, Beach House, Phosphorescent and The Antlers will find lots to like.
