Supersloth's pretty punchy, post punk goodness of "Honey Yoko" and "Like A Cigarette" from the "Blank" album

The track "Honey Yoko" by New York indie rockers Supersloth is a super engaging, enticing song from the get go. The sort of late 70's / early 80's power pop beginning prog (I thought of The Replacements) pulled at my collar and made me grin and then, amazingly, the song never stops getting better. It is sonically rich and the musical narrative propelled by singer songwriter Noel Yeo's (Shelves, Baby Combat) smart, charming lyrics pushed by a vocal aesthetic that can feel punk gruff with British tinges and the ability to flow into supremely cool higher registers. The group as a whole soaring and tightly wound with jamming drumming / bass and dreamy guitars that become ultra pretty at the end makes for a blending, clashing of indie rock and power pop tones. Tonally, a stir of bands like the aforementioned The Replacements and Dinosaur Jr. and (maybe) the Lemonheads. Besides the Yoko reference is beyond romantic, "honey don't you know, you're my Yoko from long ago".

As stunning and pretty as "Honey Yoko" is, the track "Like A Cigarette" drives with punk jags while still retaining a level of novel fun. The heaviness of the guitars and the swinging drum beat feel like classic Brit punk but there are diversions that still feel pretty, maybe dirtied up pretty but pretty just the same feel. Feral guitar sustains here, absolutely bad ass lead. For whatever crazy reason I thought of a car crash of The Gories and The B-52s.

Both songs are from the Supersloth's recently released "Blank" album. The band is comprised of: Noel Yeo (vox, guitar), Bruno Luglio (drums), Nathan Doiev (guitar) and Zach Pentel (bass).
