Premiere: Choux and the shoe gaze dream pop cinema of "Super Moon" (Official Video)

"dreamy soundscapes"

"Super Moon" by Choux, a US/Canadian indie dream pop duo comprised of lead vocalist Lizzie Carolan based in Montreal and multi-instrumentalist Jordan Gatesmith based in Minneapolis, is not only a big slice of ethereal sound cascading around you like an 80's cinema dream but, also, a song full of nuanced soft and hard edges. Carolan's vocal aesthetic, framed in a shoegaze way, feels like an amalgam of proto-punk weirdness, baroque pop and sci-fi operatic tones, navigating through Gatesmith's beautifully cool guitar lines that float through a lush fog of synth lines and easy swaying bass & beat. It feels like high art punk drenched and tempered in romance.

This evocative, cinematic sound invited me to close my eyes and flash on everything from John Hughes' "Pretty In Pink" to Luc Besson's "The Fifth Element". This ability for their music to bolster imagery makes sense, as with their previous pop project, 'Total Babe', they produced sounds that graced international commercials and television shows like Grey's Anatomy.

Carolan and Gatesmith's coming back together was preceded by diversions and opportunities that ultimately shaped Choux, as press details note:

[Lizzie left Minneapolis for Montreal to study at McGill University and Jordan went on to form indie punk band Howler which released records on London-based label Rough Trade Records (known for once being the home to bands like Arcade Fire, The Strokes, and currently Pinegrove and Starcrawler). He also released a lo-fi bedroom pop project under the moniker Wellness.]

"Super Moon", mixed by Ian Nygaard (Howler) and mastered by award winning engineer, Phillip Shaw Bova (Bahamas, Andy Shauf, Land of Talk and Devendra Banhart), is the title track of Choux's debut EP birthed from years of written materials and demos as source material to be curated and crafted into their brand of dream pop, shoegaze drenched psychedelia.

"Super Moon", the EP will be independently released on November 20th, 2020.

Choux (US-CAN) is an indie dream pop duo led by lead vocalist Lizzie Carolan based in Montreal, and multi-instrumentalist Jordan Gatesmith based in Minneapolis. They are best known for their lush soundscapes and ethereal melodies that carry listeners to another dimension.

Their previous pop project Total Babe landed them in international commercials and nationally syndicated television shows like Grey’s Anatomy. However in 2011, the two moved on to pursue different projects.

Lizzie left Minneapolis for Montreal to study at McGill University and Jordan went on to form indie punk band Howler which released records on London-based label Rough Trade Records (known for once being the home to bands like Arcade Fire, The Strokes, and currently Pinegrove and Starcrawler). He also released a lo-fi bedroom pop project under the moniker Wellness.

Despite the geographical distance, Choux was born out of a deep friendship, musical connection, and a love for dream pop. The pair began to sift through years of written material to compile demos into what has become their debut EP Super Moon.
