Topographies dreamy shoegaze post punk flame of "See You As You Fall"

"I’m in heaven but they’re running out"

Topographies out of San Francisco have just released another dreamy single “See You As You Fall,” keeping the shoegaze flame well lit. Their music is influenced by the classic post punk / dream pop styles, the beautiful gloom of the Bay area that runs in the veins of singer/guitarist Gray Tolhurst (son of Lol Tolhurst of the Cure), guitarist Jérémie Rüest and bassist Justin Oronos. This trio crafted their own sound with pieces of the 80’s and 90’s hazy underground. The track is layered with strong instrumentation and bolstered with foggy reverb, exhibiting the great mix of styles that fans of those genres and others alike will enjoy. It perfectly accompanies a cloudy coastal drive, as the sound emanates the natural rhythm of nature. Listen to “See You As You Fall” and look out for the debut Topographies album Ideal Form set for December.

"If you're a fan of Dream Pop, post-punk or shoegaze, chances you'll be hearing the Topographies name more in 2018." - Sounds Better With Reverb

"If there’s any such thing as a ‘shoegaze supergroup’, this is it. Featuring some of the biggest luminaries in the Bay Area scene, and having just completed a commanding performance for MBV Night at Part Time Punks, they’re ready to headline San Francisco this week .” - DKFM

Formed by Gray Tolhurst (Gray Tolhurst), Jeremie Ruest (Cerf Volant, Your Friend, Lavender Blush), Justin Oronos (Solip), and Lauren Grubb (Minipop, To The Wedding) in 2017, the band meshes the crushingly loud guitars and hushed vocals of 90’s shoegaze with the urgency and mechanical rhythms of post-punk. Their debut EP was recorded and produced at New, Improved Recording in Oakland, California by Alexis Berthelot (Gojira, Wolfgang Tillmans, Enablers) in late 2017.

"Pink Thoughts", the debut single from Bay Area dream pop band topographies, begins with a crystalline guitar arpeggio which quickly finds itself awash in the wake of heavy fuzzed out chords. While the song's dynamic of hushed vocals and clanging, reverb-heavy guitars draws inspiration from the textures of shoegaze, the taut drum and bass bring the vocals into a soft focus. The accompanying video directed by Julian Gabriel Bendana places the band in a grey scale kaleidoscope. Divorced from a concrete location they perform among rotating collages of water, trees, and the sun. The images emulate the texture of the Northern California night sea which matches perfectly with the bands particular brand of dreamy guitar music, owing more to the redwood dotted cliffs of the dreary grey skies favored by their (predominately British) influences. The band's figures dance and whirl in this endless black space, perhaps in a nod to "Pink Thoughts" rather oblique lyrics which concern death and the uncanny experience of communicating with deceased loved ones in dreams.
