The New America's glorious punk diatribal "Going to the Races" (Dressed like a Racist)

"I'm punch drunk and feeling brand new"

There is a glorious moment in The New America's punk rock diatribe "Going to the Races" (Dressed like a Racist) where the lead singer pours out a caustic scream and the song bangs around like a drunkard stumbling down the stairs. It feels mental and wide eyed and disjointed even though it is not... it is tightly wound, potent and a kind of big fucking exclamation and question mark at all that came before it. It made me smile broadly but then a lot of this song made me smile and bang my head about. In fact, the entire song is a glorious moment.

I don't know much about (UK) The New America and am not privy to much about them at this time but their punk sound, that is solidly old school punk (to me) in a grinding spittle thrust way, is totally engaging. There is a ferocity of, say- The Sex Pistols, The Dead Kennedys, and the kind of mindful proggy punk pain and resolution of, say- Mission Of Burma and Gang of Four. I like the tinges of rock heaviness and progressive affections snaking through (as well).

Of the song, The New America shares:

"Going to the Races (Dressed like a Racist) is a pat on the back for those who manage to remain shocked by the unapologetically normalized violence in the way we treat animals and each other."

Will we, as a people, ever put racism aside like a worn out gun. Probably not but I hope we can learn to get along with each other. I know a lot of people who are striving to start with an outstretched hand, with love.

THE FACTS AS WE KNOW THEM - PRESS NOTES:

Going to the Races (Dressed like a Racist) is a pat on the back for those who manage to remain shocked by the unapologetically normalized violence in the way we treat animals and each other.

Showing that you don’t need to be a hooligan to be a racist and you don’t need to be a racist to be a hooligan.

Races is a gentle reminder that sporting a top hat in the street isn’t a way to cover up being a thug to those under your feet.
