Body Horror and the hierarchical hammered punk domination of "The Gimp's Gimp" (Official Video)

"suck dick like the tits of your mother..."

North London's Body Horror use language that just might not be proper around Nana but sometimes the most disturbing thing is what Nana doesn't tell you. On the shotgun, hard hammered punkery of "The Gimp's Gimp" there is the pounding open warehouse drum beat, charging guitars and a manic vocal aesthetic that hurts my throat to hear. It is a rabid, feral but controlled performance intent on disturbing and getting your demons out and moshing and it works. The extended musical build up is so visceral spinning in a gleeful mayhem that when it stops to reveal a curious ambient noise and exasperated revealing words that might (or may not) make Nana blush, it plays like a dark midnight movie and like the best horror, we swim in the darkness to reveal the light.

“The tune is the tale of a Gimp that belongs to another Gimp, so it’s a kind of double negative of submissiveness. A metaphor for the unspoken, sexual underbelly of individuals in hierarchies. One man’s gimp is another man’s pimp”. - Gethyn Thomas (vocalist).

One foot in the eerie world of industrial and noise rock and the other submerged in the murky swamps of combative post-punk.

North London outfit Body Horror are releasing their debut single ‘The Gimp’s Gimp’ on April 16th. The track brings together rave-inspired rhythms, wonky guitars and jarring vocals echoing a gritty hybrid between The Prodigy and The Birthday Party. Their debut takes a peek into a seedy world; the BDSM-drenched themes and afterparty energy being both intensely chaotic and anthemic.

Having established themselves as a fierce live act, cutting their teeth live within the North London DIY warehouse scene, the post-punk quartet thought it was time to get into the studio and capture their live energy on record. What better time than within the rolling lockdowns of 2020.

“At our gigs, as soon as the first drum pattern meets the pretty horrid sample that opens the song, the crowd would start moving straight off and go pretty mental. That reaction was what made it a no-brainer for us to record ‘The Gimp’s Gimp’ and make it our first single.” - Bart Williams (bassist)

Industrial synths and jungle-esque drum parts line the unnerving fabric of the song, yet the jagged feel of ‘The Gimp’s Gimp’ doesn’t take away from its groove and danceability. Lyrically tongue-in-cheek and with a fascination for the strange; the dark and decrepit soundscape cuts into the unspoken seedy underbelly of the world nobody wants to talk about. With one foot in the eerie world of industrial and noise rock and the other submerged in the murky swamps of combative post punk, ‘The Gimp's Gimp’ evokes comparisons to Scalping and Snapped Ankles. Living somewhere between an Adam Curtis film and The Eric Andre Show, the track’s twisted music video further illustrates the band’s world.
