O.C Thomas and States of Exotica and the divergent post punk flight of "Icarus" (Official Video)

"you gotta admit it feels fun..."

[THESSENCE]

O.C Thomas and States of Exotica (UK) craft bits of jagged sideways sounds and zaniness on "Icarus". Digging the stabbing guitars, drunken lead guitar lines, percolating and snaking bass lines and a vocal aesthetic with layered harmonies. The divergent sense, inside out narrative and ultra sort of 80's pop surreality feels like an amalgam of Split Enz, Modest Mouse, St. Vincent and the Beach Boys.

[Guitarist, producer and States of Exotica frontman O.C Thomas re-imagines the myth of Icarus in 2021]

“I was interested in pursuing this idea of humanity’s collective hubris, our foolish sense of invincibility and disregard for our physical environment which, in the past year, has fought back. It is clear that nature holds the power and we stepped on that: we flew too close to the sun and we got burned.

We shot this vibrant, cartoonish video on our iPhones, within the lockdown-induced confinement of our own, respective living rooms, rounding up a cast of those with us in supporting roles, ordering face-paint, iPhone clamps and pizza. We were driven by a desire to create a visual spectacle and a performance video that would unite our households.

Representing the misadventures of Icarus, and his over-confidence and hubris, required a simple visual cue which, we felt, should be clownish, and in need of relief and release. It is difficult to find the light from the past year in amongst the shade, but this felt like a way into characterizing the kind of clownish behavior that we see on a daily basis whilst we navigate our way back to a semblance of normality.

We were unable to be together to film the video, we instead traded performance-based clips, looping them back on our televisions to unite us onscreen”
