Black Bordello and the deathly dark post punk metaphor of "Nunhead" (Official Video)

"Nunhead - they’re gonna take me there someday / So then I get to be dead and gone..."

"Nunhead" by Peckham, London based 5 piece post punk artisans Black Bordello is a wonderful surprise and example of genre blending. While the overall tones have a deep patina of art rock (maybe even baroque pop) layers, there is a lot going on. The exquisitely jammy drumming (for example) might, on the surface, feel steeped in jazz flirtations and is progressively sweeping. Sienna Bordello's (lead vocals and guitar) vocal melodies and continually shifting musical narrative that blends so many genres that the result may be better described as genre agnostic. I love the playfulness in her vocal aesthetic, and her melodies that wink and snarl too. There are moments that even, ever so subtly, dip into musical theater territiory but Black Bordello pulls that off as well.

"Nunhead" examines the gentrification of Peckham, "its new generation of disrespecting residents and the inevitable fate of us all" and that revelation explains the dark gothic nature of the Official Video shot in Nunhead cemetery and directed by Will Reid (recently working with the likes of Malady, Slowthai, LEGSS and Lauren Auder).

"Black Bordello", comprised of Sienna Bordello (lead vocals and guitar), with Henry Carpenter on Keys, Anthony Boatright on bass, Rachel Asafo-Agyei on BVs and Eddie Amos on drums, recently signed to Hideous Mink Records (Opus Kink, Fake Turins, Body Horror).

Black Bordello are a 5 piece art rock project fronted by Sienna Bordello (lead vocals and guitar), with Henry Carpenter on Keys, Anthony Boatright on bass, Rachel Asafo-Agyei on BVs and Eddie Amos on drums. They released their debut album in July 2020 which was picked up by a number of great publications including Giglist, So Young, Fred Perry Subculture and an 8/10 review in Loud and Quiet which read 'Simply calling Black Bordello’s self-titled debut album “genre-defying” doesn’t do it justice. Their theatrical and lively live shows are often packed to the rafters, and they have made a name for themselves on the London gig circuit supporting artists such as The Rebel (Country Teasers) and Goat Girl and enjoy playing at their favourite venues such as the Windmill, the Shacklewell Arms and Moth Club. The band will release their single ‘Nunhead’ in summer 2021 and subsequent EP in autumn.
