firekid and the brain stirring live "Good and Greasy" (Official Video)

"rolling up downtown getting paid by the hour..."

"Good and Greasy" by the artful lowercase firekid, the experimental project of Dillon Hodges and Heidi Feek, sort of blows your mind. There is a disconnect from reality at least a few times. Amid odd and curious bits of electronica you hear a few lines from the 1933 "The Last Messiah" (in English) by Norwegian metaphysician, author, lawyer and mountaineer, Peter Wessel Zapffe. I don't know who is the narrator but it poised while mysterious haunting bits of electronic ambience makes you feel off balance. Then the song shifts into something between a groove infested porch blues / folk indie pop with fluid jammy guitar work and Dillon serving up tasty melodies. I haven't been able to decipher the meaning of the lyrics dark or not, metaphors or not but "Good and Greasy", played live by the way, will stir up your brain.

"For inspiration, we often find ourselves outside," Feek says. "We live on 3.5 acres of Oak, Dogwood and Maple trees in northern Alabama. It only took us 6 years to finish a record, most of the time spent wandering aimlessly around our property. In the end we identified with the old saying: “'When I knew nothing, mountains were mountains and waters were waters. When I had studied a great deal, mountains were not mountains and waters were not waters. But when I finally understood the whole thing, mountains were once again mountains and waters were once again waters.'"

firekid, the experimental project from Dillon Hodges and Heidi Feek, will release their new single "Good & Greasy" along with its accompanying live music video on Sept. 24. "Good & Greasy" will be featured on the duo's upcoming album, produced by Jay Joyce, which will be released on Dec. 10, 2022.

The pair traveled from their home in Florence, Alabama to Joyce's studio in Nashville to write and record, fulfilling a longtime dream for the duo. Conversations about their individual hobbies, including Heidi's love for gardening and Dillon's curiosity into philosophy and comparative mythologies, became the foundations for a batch of innovative new songs.

Beginning as a solo project from Hodges, firekid has evolved into a collaborative creative outlet that combines their individual influences and passions while bending genre lines. In 2018, they released their acclaimed EP X&Y, introducing Hodges and Feek's mesmerizing, modern blend of traditional folk music.

Individually, they each shared the same urge to evolve the music that they loved and grew up surrounded by. Hodges became the second youngest person ever to win the National Flatpicking Championship at the age of 17. From a young age, Feek watched her father, Rory, performing traditional folk songs for fans across the country and developed her own passion for the genre. X&Y marked a time of transition for both Heidi and Dillon, dissecting the emotional growth that comes after immense loss. Mixing elements from bluegrass, pop and hip hop, the innovative collection of songs served as the starting point to their creative journey together.

Previously, firekid earned praise from NPR Music, CMT, USA Today, Paste, Wide Open Country, The Bitter Southerner and more. Additional singles are set to be released in the coming weeks.
