Julia Daigle and the hypnotic midnight mystery of "Sur la haute colline" (Official Video)

"from her debut album, 'Un singe sur l'épaule'..."

"Sur la haute colline" from Montreal-based artist Julia Daigle (co-founder of Paupière) and from her debut album, 'Un singe sur l'épaule', feels like an elegant, sultry mystery. I don't speak (or understand) a lick of French but have always found the language to sound emotional and poetic and Daigle imbues the language with an empowered, passionate croon. The bell like keys, dramatic synths stir images of midnight walks and secret liaisons. "Sur la haute colline" (translation "on the high hill") is a phrase extracted from René Choppin's work, "The afternoon color of honey and late autumn", published in 1933. The track exists as a musical homage, maybe even a beautiful distorted reflection of Choppin and his words, stirring up even more mystery as if viewing a vintage René Clair film but only in negative.

The accompanying music video as directed by Isabelle Campeau and edited by Yann Jobin feels surreal and purposely, artfully tattered is expounded on:

"It is an assemblage of metaphorical images captured before the pandemic. The ambiguous relationship between Julia and the moon is portrayed in the form of a mysterious ritual, halfway between play and pursuit, between release and tension. The editing is cyclical, nervous and chaotic. The lo-fi aesthetic approach is assumed and is situated like a grainy veil between the artist and the viewer, echoing the opacity of the symbolism present in the video."

Julia Daigle will be releasing her debut album "Un singe sur l'épaule" on November 5 via Lisbon Lux Records.

Julia Daigle co-founder of the band Paupière, discovered and took up composing in 2013 when Pierre-Luc Bégin offered her to put her lyrics on one of their compositions. An experience that led to the creation of Jeunes Instants (2015), À jamais privé de réponse (2017), Jettatura (2018) and Sade Sati (2021).

Having practiced classical and contemporary dance during her childhood, performing comes naturally to Julia. Throughout her artistic journey she met the director Dominic Vanchensteing (Bernardino Femminielli, Jeff and the Holograms, Plaza Musique), with whom she engaged in a parallel adventure. Together they created a bucolic and elegant universe, which evokes a resemblance to the progressive Quebecois band Contraction, as well as medieval and folk inspirations from Kate Bush, Serge Gainsbourg, Robert Wyatt. They combined contemporary pop with the echoes of a music venue from the depths of time. From their union the EP Le coin plié was born along with the sumptuous album Un singe sur l’épaule being released in November 2021 via Lisbon Lux Records.
