PENNY and the somber soul pop indie revelations of "Ur Girl's Fine" (Official Video)

On her recent track, "Ur Girl's Fine" by lo-fi divergent UK artist, singer-songwriter, Penny, you are graced with such an absolutely captivating keyboard hook and pushed forward dance beat that even before the groovy bass line steps in you are gleefully taken away. All that before Penny's beautiful vocal aesthetic washes over you. It is a testament to the power of a powerful, yet, simple sound, endearing, beautiful melodies crooned by a vocalist who feels each syllable that she emotes and that absolutely pretty rhythmic hook that stitches it all together. The rich somber pop tones in "Ur Girl's Fine" are informed by dark times at her days at Bangor University when 'she found herself trapped in a toxic relationship which overshadowed her experience of being a student.'

She explains:

“When I wrote Ur Girl’s Fine, I was well and truly trapped in a toxic and abusive environment, and the song was just a way for me to romanticize the whole situation; a way to convince myself it was all normal and fine, I feel sorry for the girl who wrote this song back then, but I also feel so proud of how much she’s grown and changed. Amongst all the bad stuff, Ur Girl’s Fine is the first song that I was lucky enough to work with Will Serfas on, and it seems to have been the OST for a lot of amazing memories with my friends. These days, I like to sing this song as a love note to myself, and to those pals who’ve been there for those sweet, sweet memories.”

I love this track that, in some ways, harkens back to 80's soul pop. Penny collaborates (exclusively) with Will Serfass (aka WASSAILER), who has produced her debut EP (due early in 2022).  AND I love the DIY shaped lo-fi homemade Official Video.

“I wanted the video I produced for Ur Girl’s Fine to represent the tight knit community I’m so lucky to be involved in. Along with my family, my friends really helped me to get back to the playful, loving person I once used to be. It’s pretty much a cosy love-letter to my gorgeous pals to say thanks for being so accepting and lovely <3” - Penny

“Bringing together vulnerable songwriting, sweet vocals and charming melodies” - The Line of Best Fit

“wavering synths with buoyant vocals” - Notion

Fast-rising Huddersfield singer songwriter PENNY returns with her dream-like new single ‘Ur Girl’s Fine’, released via Empty Streets Records / Because Music on September 1.

Featuring an irresistible synth refrain, balanced with PENNY’s angelic vocals, ‘Ur Girl’s Fine’ is a mid-tempo banger which marks a particularly difficult time in the artist’s life. Her days at Bangor University were seminal for all the wrong reasons, and she found herself trapped in a toxic relationship which overshadowed her experience of being a student.

“When I wrote Ur Girl’s Fine, I was well and truly trapped in a toxic and abusive environment, and the song was just a way for me to romanticize the whole situation; a way to convince myself it was all normal and fine,” Explains PENNY. “I feel sorry for the girl who wrote this song back then, but I also feel so proud of how much she’s grown and changed.

PENNY collaborates exclusively with Will Serfass (aka WASSAILER), who has produced her debut EP (due early in 2022). The song is accompanied by a lo-fi homemade video, which PENNY created as an ode to the Northern Quarter family in Huddersfield. The grassroots bar and music venue plays an intrinsic part in the local scene, hosting bands and artists from the region long before they start touring nationally. “Northern Quarter is my safe place. I worked there when I got back from Uni. I had never really been in a big, close friendship group before until I met people there - I didn't have to explain my views, or why things are right and wrong."

Speaking about the video, PENNY said: “I wanted the video I produced for Ur Girl’s Fine to represent the tight knit community I’m so lucky to be involved in. Along with my family, my friends really helped me to get back to the playful, loving person I once used to be. It’s pretty much a cosy love-letter to my gorgeous pals to say thanks for being so accepting and lovely <3”
