Adi Sun and the lush soul pop indie rock reflections of "Twin Flame"

On the pop forward indie rock "Twin Flame", Boston based Adi Sun injects 70's genre agnostic tones, 90's soul pop with their lush rock sound and laces it with touches of 80's romance wave while still feeling proggy. The musicality is top notch and Sun's vocal aesthetic provocative and passionate. Adi Sun helmed the 2017 born shoe gaze / alt rock band Phenomenal Sun and in 2019 embarked on a solo career / project and maybe a point of self-discovery and realization. As press notes indicate it was a journey that included falling in love, suffering heartbreak, contracting shingles, coming out as transgender, while writing and recording new music for her solo career.

[“‘Twin Flame’ is the equivocal story of someone so infected by a romantic connection, they lose themselves in emotional co-dependence,” Adi says. “It’s a tragedy of passion and devotion but also psychic connection, attachment, disconnection and surrender.” Adi adds: “A friend of mine once said that, in love ‘once a flame, always a flame’. In some cases I think that’s true really, the heart wants what the heart wants and sometimes it gets us into trouble. A flame has the power to destroy and to purify, and in this story I think it does a bit of both.”]

Like last year’s “Bella Sun Lever”, for me, "Twin Flame" stands as a cross generational, cross genr'd piece of music. It is it's own thing and like periods of time where artists and art shuns current conventions and indie tropes it combines so many flavors effortlessly. I like the dense sound that does not feel beholden to any one genre. It is a hybrid without feeling audacious but instead just pure and real.

About her emotional and artistic trajectory Sun shares:

“I am in the process of building an entirely new foundation for myself,” she says. “If I went through and listed all of the obstacles I’ve created in order to dim my own light, we might be here for a while. A big part of this process is taking responsibility. There’s just no point in lying to myself anymore. Perspective is everything and I’ve learned many lessons from the negative patterns of thinking and feeling that lead to years of addiction and depression, self-sadism and all of that. I have appreciation for the darkness now, because it’s ultimately what generates the fertile soil for new, healthier growth.”

AND

“I’ve committed my life to pursuing the Great Work,” she concludes. “‘Twin Flame’, ‘My Fault’ and ‘Bella Sun Lever’, like all my creations, are just stepping stones along the way. I create as a way to reflect and heal from painful experiences... to create beauty from the dark and the light. It’s taken years to heal and appreciate the mirrors within and outside myself. It’s a continuous process, and a big part of it has been learning to release my mind from the bonds of concepts like ‘good and bad’ and simply have gratitude for it all.”

Boston Music Awards nominee Adi Sun (she/her/they) fell in love, suffered heartbreak, fell ill with shingles, quit her own band, came out as transgender, and still managed to write and record new music for her emerging solo career. A powerful presence in the Boston music scene, Adi Sun's anticipated third single Twin Flame is set for release on September 24th

Adi Sun was the creative force behind alt-rock shoegaze band Phenomenal Sun who's appearance on the Boston music scene in 2017 brought five singles and multiple live performances including a semi-finals appearance at the 2019 Rock & Roll Rumble. In summer 2019 Adi Sun left PS to pursue a solo career which kicked-off with the release of her debut single "Bella Sun Lever" in July 2020 and subsequent releases "My Fault" in February and "Bella Sun Lever (Zizza Remix) earlier this month.
