anguid and the dark digital folk reminders of "american psycho" featuring Sandwoman

 

"since every time I'm downtown I feel myself getting meaner..."


Listening to "american psycho" by folk singer songwriter anguid (aka Brooklyn based Aidan Boardman) with the artful contributions of Sandwoman (aka Los Angeles based Chrissy Sandman) and I couldn't help, at first, to think of the bloody immorality of investment bankers and serial killers. Those visions slowly disappeared two steps in and I was able to feel Aidan's somber lyrics as acoustic guitar sways and sparse piano notes fall like spatters of thick raindrops. Chrissy's amazing harmonies elevate the emotionality and beauty of the song that as Aidan shares the meaning of the song:

"american psycho is another song of mine that is based on my relationship with the smartphone. I was going through a breakup and we were trying to remain friends. And so you know, you have all this evidence of the relationship on the phone, there’s evidence of the friendship on the phone, social media feeds you become consumed by. Ultimately, it's a question about what the phone actually does, or what my relationship with the phone does for me.. or perhaps how it works against me.”

The poetry on "american psycho" (like all great poetry) paints imagery that digs deeply but also feels artfully vague. I like lyrics that have emotional spaces in between the lines that only the author can sometimes know. I also appreciate lyrics that are somehow mysterious and utterly surprising to the author too.
