Honyock and the beautiful dark pop imaginings of "Boutonnière"

"we raise out glass to different gods..."

"Boutonnière" by L.A. based Honyock spins slowly like a psychedelic onion unraveling. It sometimes feels sonically bipolar shifting from something that feels like baroque goth teetering on dark art rock to deep shades of 70's pop albeit dark pop. The somber melodies and intimate tones are truly beautiful pulling in simple yet elegant dark prose. I found myself imagining an emotional amalgam of John Lennon and Nick Cave.

Press notes reveal that ["Boutonnière" was recorded in the dead of winter after a 6 week long tour and subsequent festival cycle left the band down a member and searching for a way to get back to basics. The song hinges heavily on a sense of life losing its meaning in the process of counting ones own curses. And losing faith in ones own ability to cope through self indulgence. The founding members Tyler Wolter and brothers Mason and Spencer Hoffman recorded the track in one session at Elliot Smith's New Monkey Studios in Van Nuys with Hope Brush Engineering. It was mixed by Spencer Hoffman and Mastered by Sam Eliot Stern. It is available everywhere through Park The Van Records.]

"Boutonnière" is the follow up to the band's 2020 EP "#13" also via Park The Van Records.

Honyock is a California four-piece comprised of brothers Mason & Spencer Hoffman, Tyler Wolter and Christian Midthun. 2018 saw the release of Honyock’s debut full length “El Castillo”, produced by Father John Misty’s David Vandervelde, and a six week tour that took them to the four corners of the U.S. In support of El Castillo, the band also opened for the likes of La Luz, The Dodos, Gabriella Cohen, and Surfer Blood. The band has since relocated to Los Angeles, with their new EP “#13” as their first batch of recordings since making the move south.

The EP traces a world-weary picture of the fractured moments and missed opportunities of day-to-day life, woven through songs tinged with an updated nostalgia. A love letter to their favorite records of the late 70’s and early 80’s, heavy themes are drenched in riffs, explosive camp and dizzying synths. The slim four track release was self produced, and principally recorded during a two day session under the guidance of the masterful engineer Riley Geare (Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Caroline Rose).
