OGMH and the dark post punk /Goth pop mirror of "Told You"

"oh, I want to slay myself because I wasn't ready for 25..."

Eastern Switzerland based OGMH on "Told You" from their new EP "Die or Die" is a dark post punkian / Goth pop track with darkwave tendencies and maybe other tendencies. The EP, in it's entirety, goes past existential dread and floats in feelings of sorrow, heartbreak, panic and depressive helplessness. In fact, "Told You", amid a tactile beautiful bass line and sprinkles of synth drops, a forward drum beat and strident vox feels like reoccurring suicidal ideation centered around leaving this mortal coil because "life ended at 25". This is dark territory and the heaviness here spoken loud and clearly should maybe have a warning label on it like - "If you are severely depressed or have had thoughts of Suicide proceed with caution or don't listen". Now I say this half jokingly and half not and I, just me your average music writer, feels that darkness in art is, in fact, cathartic. It is one purpose of art to be a mirror of all things, just not driving around town, or relationship stuff. Sometimes acknowledging dark thoughts helps to extinguish them, not flare them up. It is like writing down the names of the past toxic people in your life on pieces of paper and ceremonially burning them in fire.

OGMH probably have some heavy discussions as they are comprised of (as they say) "a nihilist, communist, Christian and goldsmith who have found each other musically". That mix somehow feels so refreshing. I do remember a time when those on the far right and far left actually could co-exist, could be friends, could even marry each other. Concepts, ideas of all sorts, I say share them artistically, talk about things, bring all thing to light and go from there.

OGMH describe themselves as a nihilist, communist, Christian and goldsmith who have found each other musically. The names of the quartet are Beat Schenk, Alex Nauva, Sascha Schwegler and Ruben Gasser. Linked by coincidence to the “Ocean Grove Memorial Home” in New Jersey, OGMH started their journey into the musical abyss in 2016. Starting with Garage Rock, the four Swiss find themselves at a dreamy-melodic as well as energetic and synthesizer ridden stop of Post Punk and Goth. Always being faithful to their DIY origin and after their albums “OGMH” and “Void”, the band celebrates the junction with their new EP “Die or Die” coming out this fall.
