"feed me, I'm looking so pale, feed me, beneath the black veil..."
Sister Void is the nom de scène of video director, artist, singer- songwriter, musician Lindsey Nico Mann and "feed me" is her second single of 2021. A collaboration with Marshall Gallagher of Teenage Wrist who produced as well as provided synth and guitar along with Ryan Bernardo of Fitness pounding out the drums. "feed me" was written by Lindsey whose vox and bass are pivotal on this hypnotic alt rock track. It is so crazy how this track can get under your skin. It cajoles with a comfortable acoustic guitar and ramps up on you, pulling you in before you even realize it. This ability to suck you in is notable because as Lindsey shares "The story of “feed me” is inspired by the idea of being taken unknowingly to a cult meeting."
The musical narrative, if you let the song flow around you and embrace you (as I did listening with closed cup headphones and my eyes closed) might cast dramatic images. Produced so dynamically with sounds swirling around you, with exquisitely big pounding drums that would give Steve Albini pause, darkly romantic synth melodies and most importantly, Lindsey's resonant vocal aesthetic that feels both bruised and husky, empowered but beat up. When she pushes her voice into higher registers it feels like a wail more than the artifice of being sung, there is grit and yet she is a great singer. It is hard to explain but her vocal character thankfully overpowers her beautiful and powerful 'singing' voice. In this way she reminds me a lot of Johnette Napolitano from Concrete Blonde. If you are not familiar with Concrete Blonde, shame on you (wink).
The lyrics are full of gems and rather than type those lyrical expressions here it would be more impactful for you to hear them within this great song. They did, however, get me thinking of all the things that we are fed. Compliments, propaganda, poisonous shaped barbs of half truths designed to turn us into something we are not. I also thought of the cult of personality, the charlatans, politicians with fake smiles, crazy eyed preachers on television. We consume so much crap, no wonder so many of us are broken.

In the end, Sister Void's "feed me" with elements of alt rock, busker punk and grunge is a darkly romantic and sinister story of mind control fueled by evil intentions.
