00_ and the alarm bells, intense collisions of "Claudia" (Official Video)

"Claudia... Claudia"

"Claudia" by Naarm, Australia based 00_ (double oh nothing) is the kind of song that feels more like an edgy movie than a song. Patterned bass notes mimic a tense alarm, runaway collisions of sound where there once was prior, soothing dreamy ponds of sleepy psychedelia and feral splashy downbeats that ramp up out of nowhere make you see things. You might see riots, or moments of terror, or flights of fancy, the kind of out of breath gasp that you might feel running away from a fire where it is an arson fire or not.

I like all of it. The bursts of feral (what sounds like) improvisational energy is oddly compelling. I think I especially like how the sinewy guitar and bass lines hang in the air because it is at those moments when you feel like anything can happen. I also love the vocal performance that while somewhat buried in the overall mix feels sort of wild eyed, a bit ID, manic yet inside too.

"Claudia" is the second single off the band's "Ca\yptra" album. The band says:

"Written and recorded on the stolen land of the Wurundjeri and Bunurong people of the Kulin Nation. We pay our respects to all First Nations elders past, present and emerging."

00_ (AUS)

00_ (double oh nothing) are an experimental rock band with a drip fed, magnetic sound. A warm damage, a gleaming vocal performance, a coordinated racket of unhinged guitar smothered in a viscous porridge of urgent drums and bass.

Based in Naarm, so called Melbourne, 00_ are a dose of reality. Dissonant, ever-changing, overwhelming and unpredictable. With their body of work thus far seeing them dip their toes all over, they frequent sounds from post-punk to noise rock, no wave and even a slither of pop. Yet, they are very much a product of their environment, drawing inspiration from fellow Australian artists such as The Dirty Three, The Drones and No sister.

Our increasingly apocalyptic world needs a soundtrack.
