Erotic Secrets of Pompeii and the bizarre mysterious punk roundabout of "Truth Coming Out of Her Well"

Bristol (UK) based Erotic Secrets of Pompeii are just plain delightful and seriously bent. On their latest, "Truth Coming Out of Her Well", there is something devilish about their jagged tri-polar sounds, about their sense of danger, about their boot step rivalry, their spiraling down Alice's rabbit hole with walls painted in a shocking clockwork orange. The vocal aesthetic like a full mouthed Danny Elfman meets Jello Biafra (meets the way too well spoken crazy guy at the liquor store) is not only incredibly engaging but artfully painted outside the lines in a grand guignol meets Jules Verne on absinthe way. 

The music pummels and cajoles, dazzles like scary characters on a children's carousel. Inventive and off kilter, I thought of a smattering of Pere Ubu, Frank Zappa, Oingo Boingo, Television, Gang of Four, Idles, Pavement, Charles Mingus, Radiohead. You may think of more but, in the end, it doesn't matter. This kind of weird divergence, art rock distilled with that feeling you got when you were too young to peek at dirty magazines or peer through slightly cracked doors to catch a glimpse of Psycho or Texas Chainsaw Massacre but did, is something you will either have a taste for or do not. I do.

Erotic Secrets of Pompeii are an apocalyptic art-punk band from Bristol, UK, who wind post-punk and experimental rock together like two ends of a fraying rope.

Their transgressive songs ring with disparate elements - from industrial to world music. The vocals descend from baritone drawl to manic yelp as erratically as the music pivots from catchy groove-based euphony to discord and angulation.

The band has received airplay on BBC Radio 6, Radio X and BBC Radio Bristol.
