[THESSENCE] Auld Spells and the dark desire of "Sweet Disease" (Official Video)

"oh, I need you more than I want to / do I love you more than I should..."

For all artistic intents and purposes, "Sweet Disease" by Edinburgh (UK) based Auld Spells is a love song and a beautiful one but the lyrical imagery runs dark. Yes, sometimes even dark romance is better than none (I suppose) but in this intimate track pushed by Tommy Danbury's somber, brooding and battered croon and a soundscape that feels as grand as it does like a dour Lou Reed-ish bit of busker folk punk bleed out, love feels like a crushing addiction. An opiate that may make you lose everything. The dark poetry that tumbles from Danbury's lips while electric guitar chords strum and piano sparkles like a 60's tear jerker filtered through Goth rock lenses is exquisitely framed and leaves an impression like a bruise full of pain but somehow tender too. Press notes reveal more:

[Auld Spells’ most honest and open song to date, “Sweet Disease” is about an agonised lover who can't escape love, even one that's poisonous, dangerous and addictive. Swelling synthesisers open the song, leading into a soft piano-driven tune inspired by “Ghosteen” and “Carnage”-era Nick Cave and Warren Ellis. The song's slow burn and cathartic climax are an homage to Robert Fripp’s work on “Heroes”. Los Angeles-based artist Sydney Mills directed the video, filled with gothic imagery and plenty of witchcraft..."].

Get lost in the dark cinema.

Auld Spells makes psychotropic sounds laced with dreampop undertones. The Edinburgh-based six piece is made up of lead singer and guitarist Tommy Danbury; keyboardist Rob Spellsman; guitarist Alex Read; drummer Peter Wilson and brothers Murray and Sandy Raeburn on guitar/keys and bass. The band’s reverb-drenched melodies – in the vein of Beach House, Neil Young, Nick Cave, My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive – brew a sonic tonic for strange times.

Tommy, the band’s principle songwriter, started in Washington DC’s 90’s hardcore punk scene before venturing into the indie and psych scenes of Virginia. After relocating to Los Angeles in 2005, he helped found the shoegaze band Lower Heaven as lead guitarist then joined the psych band Magic Mirror as their bass player. He’s shared the stage with Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, The Black Angels, Dead Meadow, The Warlocks, Spindrift, The Lilys, Wooden Shjips, Sky Saxon of The Seeds, and others on legendary stages such as the Wiltern Theatre and the Troubadour.

Auld Spells formed in 2019 when Tommy moved to Edinburgh. The band has headlined shows at local Edinburgh venues Leith Depot, Henry’s Cellar Bar, and Sneaky Petes and has been busy in the studio during lockdown, waiting for venues to reopen and regularly releasing new music. Since August 2020 they’ve released seven original songs with a video accompanying each one. The band has two new dreamy Motown/Wall of Sound influenced originals, I Want You Back and Another Way, coming out April 30th.
