Red Mouth and the Hell bound traveling circus of "Heflin Hollis" LIVE (Official Video)

"Every town has a devil they say..."

"Heflin Hollis" by Muscle Shoals, Alabama singer-songwriter, musician, storyteller, visual artist, performer Red Mouth (and from his 2021 Live EP "Smells Live If You Want It") stirs up demons and angels and everything in between. Along with a full band of cohorts and collaborators, the experience feels like a traveling dark circus that has rolled through your town, obviously at it's edges. Red takes blues rock, twists it with bits of Hell bound 40's Cotton Club-esque dirty jazz, swampy porch blues and something that might be described as 70's rockabilly southern proto punk and shapes it his own way. His vocal aesthetic feels like something between a grand theatrical gesture and a possession. Red and his band, here feel road worn but commanding. There is a decidedly black leather swagger here and a propensity to share truth and consequences over hard drinks.

I thought of a rather strange amalgam of various artists like Tom Waits, the Coen Brothers, Captain  Beefheart, Nick Cave and The Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo. I am the first to admit that this is not my normal cup of tea but when I went to sleep I think Heflin Hollis invaded my dreams.

Red Mouth is from Muscle Shoals, Alabama, but, is a unique and truly original legend in an area that once boasted being the 'hit recording capitol of the world.' Active in music and touring for over 25 years and a solo artist for more than 15, Red can blend the southern music and stories he grew up surrounded by with the music he's found from throughout the world (namely punk and post punk heroes). His intense performances and story telling have lead him all over the US and even to Estonia where he and friend, Andres Roots, have had two hit songs. Constantly growing and exploring, this is not a man whose art fits a genre. Rather, he makes his own genre. Some have dubbed it Shaman Rock. However, Red himself prefers not to ever label it.
