Doublethink and the punk anxiety barometer of "Doom Scrolling" (Official Video)

"Fight fire with fire / Pour gasoline / Burn tires alight / blockade the street..." 

Emanating from an apartment in Amman, Jordan the anonymous duo Doublethink (comprised of an American Fulbright researcher and 'peacebuilding professional' as lead singer and co-producer and a blind Irish-Nigerian producer and engineer) create deep groove politico indie R&B / soul pop / garage rock sounds. My first introduction to them was the deeply grooved, 80's inspired "I Find God" and now I am writing about the garage rock / soul punk pummel of "Doom Scrolling".

I love blistering pace of this track as churning guitars get loud and soft while the splashing drum beat and bass sounds are absolute unrelenting. The vocals, passionate but aloof, sings about our endless media paranoia. How our ever present smart phones serve as anxiety barometers: “Doom Scrolling Web MD, Surge, Russia, and WMD’s”. The self aware icy cool vox and insanely unstoppable barrage made me think of an amalgam of artists like The Drums and KennyHoopla. At one point, the lead vox exclaim "Facebook's down tonight" as if the narrator needs a respite away from a hand held anxiety amplifier, a constant window to governmental corruption, the latest disease, and a madmen inflicting needless pain and suffering.
