The Mary Veils and the massive sonic hurricane of "Esoteric Hex"

"She told us she put a hex on us for climbing in her tree..."

The sheer massive heaviness of "Esoteric Hex" by Philadelphia garage alt rocker's The Mary Veils is deafening but in a glorious way. The garage rock style injected with caustic psychedelic and surf rock vibes, a kind of Oh Sees fuzzy hurricane, is attempted by many but here the sound feel elevated. I hear homages to classic mega rock bands inside their monstrous imaginings. I mean at 1:58 there is a musical breakdown with massive downbeats that has me seeing Pete Townsend doing bloody windmill guitar strikes and John Entwistle fretting off bass embellishments. There are other sonic elements that bring in rather elegant shapes within The Mary Veils full frontal garage assaults.

Of the track, frontman Brian Von Uff shares:

"The band and I moved to my old studio space in these historic mills from the 1600’s that the Swedes built. The idea for the album and name came to me while in this space. When I was younger my friend lived on Mill Street and there was an older woman who would collect animal bones and claimed to be a witch. She told us she put a hex on us for climbing in her tree. Since our music isn’t for everyone and we are forever cursed…or not, we named the song and album esoteric hex. This song came together to us on Mill Street in this space. It has a very hypnotic spell like vibe and it fit perfect."

The Mary Veils are Official Artists at this year's SWSW (2022) so bring some ear plugs and enjoy their epic sound. "Esoteric Hex," is the third single and title track off their forthcoming LP, Esoteric Hex, due March 25 via PNKSLM Recordings.

PNKSLM Recordings proudly presents our first LP with the Philadelphia garage rock band The Mary Veils, shortly following last autumn's "Somewhere Over The Rowhome" EP. Whilst "Rowhome" went a slightly more straight forward garage punk route - "Esoteric Hex" takes the band down a darker, much heavier route. For fans of bands like Oh Sees, Meatbodies, King Gizzard etc - this one's a really a no-brainer. Again produced by Jeff Zeigler (Kurt Vile, The War on Drugs etc) and Cory Hanson (Wand, Ty Segall etc), it's one of those rare records that really smashes you in the face, but also somehow sounds amazingly produced.

We get by with a little help from our friends
