Goldensuns and the embracing, beautifully sad and hopeful "Alec"

"Difficult hard not to think about before I sleep / In dreams, a physical haunting memory it makes me weak..."

Like the cyclical nature of pain, of hurt that is so devastating that it replays in your head for years, for ever, the song "Alec" is instantly beautiful. Potently beautiful like a ripped open blister sensitive to the slightest pushed breath on it. The song by Utah bred, Los Angeles based Goldensuns, the band comprised of the Meier brothers: Chase (vocals/bass), Jantzen (guitar), and Weston (drums) rides on a comfortable beat, rattling textured guitar lines and hushed "oh...ohhhs" as part of the rhythm that on the surface is unsettlingly haunting and exquisitely dreamy, romantic even (if darkly so) and (again) so, so pretty. That being said, the song is about about the boy's brother who passed away in 2014. Informed by such a tragic loss, the lyrics feel as soothingly tender as they do sad and somehow full of hope: “Big dreaming after what happened to you, Change my life go someplace new, Everything I thought you'd do, Are you gone for good or born brand new?, Had to ask myself if I was dreaming but I'm not”.

Eventually open wounds become comfortable scars. Scars you feel with your fingers as touchstones of memories born out of love.

"Alec" is the title track from Goldensuns' current 3 song EP.

Goldensuns offers a hazy soundscape composed of carefully crafted synths and melodic guitars, grounded by vocals, a bass line, and percussion that are at once nostalgic and new. The band is a brotherhood, quite literally. Made up of the Meier brothers, Chase (vocals/bass), Jantzen (guitar), and Weston (drums), their music is rooted in tight compositions that make you feel everything at once.

While the band has been claimed as the definitive sound of the Golden State, they maintain a steadfast allegiance to their Salt Lake, Utah roots. Growing up in a musical family, it wasn’t long till the brothers realized they would dedicate their lives to this. Although they’ve relocated to L.A, the band still heads to their hometown to write and produce their projects. This homemade production mentality began with their debut EP, Wine Country, continued with their Golden Sun EP which debuted as Bandcamp’s number one seller, led by the single “Kings Cup” and propelled them into the music scene.

With their third project, Give It Up, Goldensuns secured themselves a place in California’s soundscape. Their single, “I Feel This Place,” was featured in a Billabong ad campaign tying the band to that enigmatic feeling of summer days gone by. This is even more pronounced when you hone in on its vocals, harkening The Beach Boys, the other brotherhood still looming large in California’s memory. However, a closer listen to their tracks will find you drifting between a dreamscape and the hot pavement of the city. Songs like “Give It Up” evoke that all too familiar feeling of something you just can’t put your finger on. From song to song, Goldensuns blend together classic rock with new wave elements, while evading association to just one genre.

Now, the brothers are set to release their next EP in 2022, wiser with years of industry experience that quietly reveals itself in their songwriting and production. The band’s unified growth shows in their ability to create more than ‘bonfires on the beach’ music. The new project moves from high energy to darker spaces, with the intention of letting you drift along with it, no strings attached. With their new EP, Goldensuns unravel the art of feel good music as complicated, ranging in depth and really satisfying to the listener.
