Leah Dunn and the two way mirror, leap of faith of "Heresy"

"newborn spring / there is violence in the country / nothing to me but another name carved in a tree..."

There is something immediately comfortable about "Heresy" by Belmont, California based indie rock singer-songwriter Leah Dunn. It might be the falling A- Ab - E that wraps around your waist pulling you close, the jumbled drums or Leah's soft tender voice telling poetic words that feel somehow mournful. As with any song were the lyrics are not directly in front of you, you ears catch the delicacies of the music and the words trying to be able to swallow and digest both at once. That task isn't always easy and here I catch words about violence in the country and city, sonic imagery of Easter, of saviors, of possibly losing faith in one place and finding it elsewhere.

Leah shares:

"'Heresy' explores conflicting identities. I was once a Jewish student in a Catholic high school experiencing antisemitism in many forms. My peers wanted me to accept Jesus into my heart. Even if I did, I would always remain a heretic of sorts because I’m Jewish. The lyrics explore themes of questioning and change over an arrangement of open tuning nylon guitar, dreamy synths, and detailed drums, but the song ends with a haunting klezmer clarinet solo marking my commitment to Judaism and myself"

Knowing the back story or maybe more precisely, the inner one give the song more gravitas, more pain, more hope and sunlight the morning after. I love the tensions in the song, the familiarities and the departures into surprising places both sonically and emotionally.

Leah Dunn is an indie rock singer-songwriter from Belmont, California. Her latest song Low Resolution is out now. The song exposes the cycle of broken promises we make to ourselves every new year and is the perfect soundtrack for popping champagne alone on New Year’s.

An alumna of Interlochen Arts Academy, Dunn is set to graduate in ’25 from New York University where she is currently in the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music. Dunn released her debut EP ‘Oakland’ in 2019, followed by her first record ‘Wetsuit’ in 2020. The title track off the albums garnered two Spotify editorial playlist placements -- ‘Fresh Finds’ and ‘Fresh Finds Rock.’ She draws from the influences of Courtney Barnett, Phoebe Bridgers, Joni Mitchell, Sonic Youth, and Sharon Van Etten. Across 2022 Dunn will release a new body of work, one song a month, full of sharp wit, introspective wanderings, and vulnerability.
