Ger Eaton and the deep romance and 70's noir of "Phoenix" (Reborn) - Official Video

"I will always love you but the pain it brings is more than I can bear..."

Stalwart Irish composer / multi-instrumentalist, hair stylist and 70's aficionado Ger Eaton (keyboardist / guitarist for Dublin's alt rock The Pale) and a mainstay of the Irish music scene for nearly 3 decades as a member of Premonition (EMI), Las Vegas Basement (Columbia), Les Marionettes, The Carnival Brothers (and more) has been putting out his own music under his own name at the behest of his daughter and with talented divergent collaborators.

Ger's latest offering "Phoenix" (Reborn) is a beautiful affair that hinges so much on Ger's textured, graceful vocal aesthetic. His sonic countenance is incredible romantic while also feeling very art rockish even though this isn't an art rock song. It feels like 70's chamber pop with dashes of 60's-esque orchestrations that are drop dead gorgeous. In fact one of my favorite single elements of "Phoenix", the sort of western hollow body guitar notes that float along during the chorus made me think of Glen Campbell's masterful 1969 "Galveston" written by the iconic Jimmy Webb. The plaintive horn and lovely orchestrations too feel hinged in broad 60's pop (both Americana and Brit pop) and, once again, Ger's lovely melodies and light / dark lyrics push a crushing narrative full of timeless romanticism.

The funny thing is that the first time I heard "Phoenix" I didn't get it. Maybe I was in the wrong headspace and just not receptive but as I sort of passed it again, and again on my electronic desk and pushed play often I fell hard (really hard) to it's enormous spell. Written by Ger Easton, I feel compelled to list all involved in this amazing piece of art.

“Dad.. why are you always hiding in a band.. release your own music!” Stuck at home (er ..only a Home of the Year finalist 2015) during Covid 19, Ger Eaton, creative director, future planner, musical collaborator and style savant, heeded this advice from his recently self-appointed A&R daughter, 18 year old Jude, dusted off his old 4 Track Tape machine, and is finally releasing his first solo project single entitled “I Thought I’d a Friend”. Jude had noted that while her Dad had worked with Duke Special, Jack L, Mundy, Fionn Regan & The Pale (to name just a few), appeared on Later with Jools Holland, played Glastonbury, toured extensively at home and in the US with his own bands Las Vegas Basement, The Carnival Brothers and (her favourite) Les Marionettes, he had never released music as a solo artist. “Your like that old guy…” she said “Brian Eno.. you always stand out from the rest”. As creative director and fashion forecaster of 25 yrs for the chic Robert Chambers Hair Salon, Ger has indeed used his creative talents to turn everything he encounters (including himself) into a visual kaleidoscope of flair. Now Ger, while ruefully accepting that the modern A&R approach has changed, is taking Jude’s advice when releasing “I Thought I’d a Friend”. Jude maintains that due to her Dad’s unique look and interests he can appear in any number of media formats (such as fashion, hairdressing, styling, and interior design) as well as, of course… the usual music ones!
