polyheDren and the spoken word avant funk rock fusion of "Sixteen Gold Candles" feat. The Residents & Josh Freese (Official Video)

"as the glow from sixteen candles light up a small corner of the room, she looks up..."

"Sixteen Gold Candles" from the divergently drawn polyhedren, (this time) a collaboration with the iconic experimentalist The Residents, drummer extraordinaire, Josh Freese (NIN, Devo) & game composer Dren McDonald, is wonderfully wierd. The spoken word section made me think immediately of iconic French-born American writer, teacher, and radio performer Joe Frank (R.I.P.) and his absurdist monologues that would often be set to music. I remember listening via the also iconic KCRW Santa Monica (California) in the late 80's and more.

"Sixteen Gold Candles" has that same sort of thing going on while crafting avant soul pop that split off into funk rock fusion-istic wild places as Mid-Eastern sliding tones shine in the background. It is a bit like darting into different rooms at a strange apartment house as realized by Stephen King, Talking Heads and Quincy Jones. Background vocals are done up spectacularly by Zoe Ellis and Ashling Cole (Prince, Santana, Larry Graham), and all other instruments were played by Dren McDonald. Produced/Mixed by Dren McDonald, mastered by Nathan Moody/Obsidian Sound.

POLYHEDREN is a project that raises money for non-profits using music collaborations. 100% of the sales/streaming from Psychic goes to Bay Area Music Program, to help provide music lessons for kids who couldn't otherwise afford them (bayareamusicproject.org).

The wild and wonderful party play of "Sixteen Gold Candles" is from the full length "PSYCHIC" available on all streaming platforms like Atmos/Apple Spatial audio on Apple Music, Tidal and Amazon Music, and of course you can order the digital download or CD at https://polyhedren.bandcamp.com.

This is a unique collaboration between longtime experimental, anonymous band The Residents, drummer to the stars, Josh Freese (NIN, Sting, Devo, Danny Elfman, A Perfect Circle), and game music composer/producer, Dren McDonald. It's a mashup of surreal soundscapes, middle eastern instruments and a Daptone groove with call and response vocals.
