Brite Spot and the surf punk-esque / alt pop punch and dreams of "Makes for a Good Story" (Official Video)

"running out of time, right on cue..."

Some songs make declarative statements, they tell a perspective or story right out. You easily know what it is about. Other songs deal in vague poetry, words or phrases that hang in the air as interesting pieces of fruit to cherry pick, taste what is sweet what is bitter and what appeals or even relates to you deeply. "Makes for a Good Story" by Los Angeles based Brite Spot is more of the latter. Not only does the lyrical content and vocal aesthetic (wonderfully rendered, by the author, songwriter, producer Matt Sztyk) tug at the empathetic amoung us but the pounding tom tom beat, the percolating music, plucked lead lines and sort of surf punk low tones feel vast and dramatic in the same way that 60's rebel pop was (think of the melodrama of Dead Man's Curve and the inner turmoil of James Dean) but filtered through modern contemporary tones.

Somehow I thought of artists like Porches, the Drums and Twenty One Pilots all at once, sort of smushed together like silly putty only to make an impression off of an old comic book. It all feels wonderfully ID too and it feels like the kind of song that would be so fun to play, I am already air drumming and fucking killing it.

Brite Spot is an alt indie act led by songwriter / producer Matt Sztyk. The music pays homage to the guitar based punk and indie bands that Sztyk grew up listening to and the alternative / new wave songs that anchored a place for pop outside the mainstream.

The project started in 2021 while a quarter-life crisis arrived a decade late and hit its peak when Sztyk lost his job of almost ten years without a moments notice (fired from the clergy on a zoom call). After receiving a laughable severance pay, the NJ native reclused to his Los Angeles apartment and began writing the songs that would become Brite Spots debut release.
