Safety Jacket and the tin hearted pain and punch of "My Head Is A Wasp Nest" (Official Video)

photo by Percy Walker-Smith    "life is full of contradictions / please don't make this complicated / can you make it easy for me?"

"My Head Is A Wasp Nest" by Brighton, UK based Safety Jacket starts with theses words:

"I can hear the foxes having sex outside my window
It reminds me of the pain of love that all of us most go through
It reminds me that I should just close my window
It reminds me that I’m still here on my own"

The combination of those curious, funny, striking words as sung by guitarist George Smale, with an exasperated vocal aesthetic, along with jangly guitar, running bass lines and free form drums feels like a peanut butter and jelly and hot sauce sandwich. I mean that as an utter compliment. I am digging the beautiful thing that they have built here. A song that feels absolutely raw, unfettered, artful but not over-indulgent. A song that underplays the power of the message and the power of the music. Like 80's British mod revisionists like The Jam (back in the day), the amps compared to the vocals don't feel like they are turned up to 10. The sound feels wonderfully stripped down while feeling artful and powerful. This is not only because this is a three piece band but because of songwriting and production choices. Ones that I love. And I love the brutal poetic lyrics, they are unique and burrow in your heart. I thought of Gang of Four, Violent Femmes and early Arcade Fire (yeah, really) in the same breath for some reason. I also thought of the tin man who desperately was seeking a heart.

Safety Jacket is Harvey Cash (Bass & vocals), George Smale (Vocals & guitars) and the irrepressible Joseph Thorpe (Drums, vocals, piano, synths & acoustic guitar).

"My Head Is A Wasp Nest" is from their debut album "Honey From The Wasp Nest" dropping August 12th, 2022.

Safety Jacket is a band from Brighton formed in late 2019 when three best friends; George, Harvey and Joe, finally started playing music together. Their vulnerability, raw energy and the closeness of their friendship comes across in their live shows, through fragile and cathartic indie rock songs. 2022 will also see the release of their debut album.
