Plastic Cowboys and the big indie rock sweep of "Mundane Ecstasy"

"eyes of blue, a darkness shining over you..."

The big passionate sweep of "Mundane Ecstasy" despites it's sort of oxymoronic name is impossible to cast aside. The band is Dublin based Plastic Cowboys and their unbridled hard edges make me smile and want to pound something, preferably drums but maybe chords on the songs big down beats. Besides the pure hard dynamics, the lots of loud and moments of quiet, there is a combination of late 70's indie rock explosiveness (in the potent guitar shapes and soaring lead lines and bottom heavy forward pushes of bass and drums in tandem) and 90's American college radio-esqueness too. A time when there was a free for all blend of jangle pop stemming from 80's power pop and folk underpinnings colliding with indie rock and punk, a sweeping lovely moving brooding sound. At least this is what these ears sense. Plastic Cowboys for me contain the virulent musical D.N.A. of bands like The Pixies, Dinosaur Jr., Hüsker Dü, R.E.M., Big Country, just to name a few. I feel a purely rock meets heartland sound free from any pop tentacles at all.

And I love that.

Plastic Cowboys are Ciarán McGann (Vocals, Guitar), Darren McCarthy (Bass). Liam Douglas (Guitar) and Brad (Drums). A debut album is on the way.

Plastic Cowboys are an indie rock band based in Dublin, who formed in 2019. Their ever evolving sound has featured elements of 70s punk rock, grunge, indie rock and garage rock.

The band's first 2 singles '99 on a Saturday' and 'Not as Cool' garnered over 30k streams on Spotify and gained them a slot at the 'Whelan’s Ones To Watch’ showcase in Dublin January 2020.

Since then they have used their time during the Covid-19 pandemic to write, record and release their debut EP, 'Splinter' and the singles, 'None Like You', 'Clichéd Ciggy Smoker' and 'Time Is Feeling Inadequate'.

With over 100k streams on Spotify, features on several Spotify Editorial playlists and new music in the works this is an exciting time for the band as they cement their name on the list of ‘One’s To Watch’.

2022 is going to be a busy time for Plastic Cowboys as they look forward to getting back to the stage, get ready to release a new EP and start work on their debut album.
