"I’ve been thinking about hunger / How I eat when I am tired / They call that “transfiguration” / Make me into something wild..."
Before reading A.O. Gerber's revelations about her latest artful song "Hunger" (a presumed first peak at her sophomore album "Meet Me At The Gloaming" dropping on October 14 of 2022 on Father/Daughter Records) I thought about all kinds of hunger. The hunger for food, the hunger to be loved, the hunger for self fulfilment, the hunger to find meaning in life and the hunger to be one's true self all the time, every second of every day. Within all these types of primal needs, it is horrible to be hungry and worse to be starving.
"Hunger" begins elegantly, stately even, with swelling sounds and Gerber setting the stage. As the groove drops in (love the textures, there are so many) on a slippery bass and almost tribal drums with big strident synth sounds that erupt in startling ways, chunky guitar rhythms in the background as a deep framework for Gerber's self assured vocals and layers of potent other vox (maybe self harmonies). The song, a blend of indie rock, baroque and chamber pop with what might be called avant folk pop underpinnings is one of those songs you get lost in. Deep, thoughtful words and a dense lush forest of sounds.
Of the song Gerber shares:
“This song sort of wrote itself in the midst of a really devastating fire season in LA. I’d been thinking a lot about the opposing forces of desire and negation, all the different ways we both consume and restrict as individuals and as a culture. I’ve spent so much of my life vacillating between these polarities, making myself small physically and spiritually. I haven’t always had the ability to critique that impulse in myself but it felt good to do that here."
The gorgeous video as directed by Vivian Wolfson feels like a parable and while I do not want to spoil what it has to offer as an accompaniment to the song (metaphorically or not), this is what A.O. Gerber shares:
“This song is lyrically heavy, so I knew I wanted the video to poke a bit of fun at itself. All I told Vivian (the director, who — let it be known — graduated high school less than a month after we filmed) was that I wanted cake to be shoved in my face at some point. From that she came up with this absurdly stunning set design and concept. Everyone on the crew put so much heart into it. I’ve never laughed so much on set.”
