"the words they spill into your head is an illusion..."
There are songs that feel like songs and others that feel like something else. "Past Tense" by singer-songwriter, composer Matisse Zuzu with it's tiptoeing piano shapes and big velvet curtains that sweep you up with grand gestures feels more like a stage play. An intimate fable of sorts. A lot of that has to do with Zuzu's vocal aesthetic that can, at times, feel lost in a dream that she cannot escape from. Amid lush strings almost military drum line propulsions and layers of interwoven musicality (and maybe ambience) she seems to run by mirrors while staring at some too. Lyric like, “You grew up with no one alike. You hold your woes so gratefully: and though they can’t be justified, they’ve painted whom within resides” constructed in poetic ways heightens the surreal ambivalence and, ultimately, realizations of self to grow from as she reveals on the chorus, “I am a creature drawn in past tense experiences. The future me can now commence”.
I would expect nothing less artistic from an artist named Matisse Zuzu which feels like a time traveler from another place or time.

MATISSE ZUZU is a singer, writer of lyrics and melodies, composer, producer, and a novice mixer of her songs. Her debut single along with its music video, Past Tense was released on August 5th, 2022 with more music and videos on the way. She is currently a part-time student at at her local community college in Michigan for her Associates of Music and Recording Technology. Her tunes are said to have "haunting" and "cinematic" qualities, lending to a full immersive experience - two characteristics she cherishes and hopes to convey in her music. She is most inspired by outer space and dark academia as most of the art she consumed growing up had a gloomy, melancholic, collegiate vibe.
