Gilded Lows and the elevated darkly romantic Americana noir of "Last Call"

"invasions I see of fleeting release..."

You would need a heavy machete to cut through the dense sonic thicket and resonant brattle of "Last Call" by Gilded Lows, the storytelling / musical project lead by Austin singer songwriter Spencer Carter (Dead Swagger). The resulting atmosphere spearheaded by Spencer's vocal countenance that feels mythical compared to most, deep and elegant, sagely, coarse and maybe emotionally drawn somewhere between starry eyed dreamer and 'I don't give a fuck' is extra compelling. That amazing voice takes an already gutsy calloused noir sound to another level, to something classic but darkly bold like a novel (maybe) penned by an amalgam of artists like Ernest Hemingway, Cormac McCarthy, and Anne Rice.

Press notey stuff reveal some fascinating details:

[“Last call” by Gilded Lows is a good ol fashioned Western Epic with the reverb turned to ten, mixing old sensibilities with something new, dark and at times hauntingly beautiful. Shoegaze and country is maybe one of the more ambitious crossovers but Gilded Lows has an aptitude for finding purchase in those echoes. The song chronicles the last moments, the indignation and the regrets of an unnamed protagonist. Culminating in a Scott Walker Esque wall of sound in the final act symbolizing the great beyond. This recording has drums by Greg Clifford “Heartless Bastards”, Guitar and organ work by Buckley Willis, Bass by Lolita Lynne “Tito & the Tarantulas” with Lyrics and vocals by Spencer “Boone” Carter.]

Utterly unique and compelling, romantic stuff, indeed.

Gilded Lows is a project fronted by Spencer Carter, who cut his teeth a songwriter in Austin Texas with the Swing-Punk band Dead Swagger. The music draws from a variety of influences including 60's Country, and Rockabilly, to Brit-pop and Shoegaze. Reverberating Guitar swells, and string sections create a vast haunting sound. Setting a stage for Spencer's baritone hearkening to Orbison, Cash and Cave.
