Dead Patrons and the dark post punk romance of 'Lover' (Official Video)

"and I'll be your slave again..."

The heavy alt rock atmospheres and tribal punk drums on 'Lover' by South East London's Dead Patrons moves on urgent chunky guitars and snaking bass lines. Paul Killengray’s vocal performance with a tactile sense of brooding and artful sonic countenance feels to me like a nostalgic amalgam of artists like Paul Banks (Interpol), Bryan Ferry (Roxy Music) and Richard Butler (Psychedelic Furs) and part of me wishes his voice felt even more present in the mix, great voice. That being said, from top to bottom this is a gorgeous production. The heaviness and spatial dynamics feel so big giving the song a darkly romantic tone and the big eruptions of sound feel as grand as they do post punk alluring.

The Official Video features the famous English comedian Seann Walsh and as press notes indicate [delivering on a promise to get fucked up in a hotel room. The comedian is seen drinking himself into a state of turmoil, locked away with nothing but a bottle of whiskey. We see him battling his inner demons, before he picks himself up from the brink of despair, sets his suit right, and walks out the door to tackle whatever it is that has him so shaken up.]

During lockdown the band locked themselves away in Antenna Studios, Crystal Palace with producer Jonathan Clayton, and left with a collection of songs now ready for release. 'Lover' is a perfect piece of post punk drama. I look forward to hearing more.

Dead Patrons started as a dare. One that has got very out of hand - for all the right reasons…

The South East London heavy alt four piece are inspired by a wide mixture of influences from Deerhunter to Subtle to Bowie. The members have created a war chest of songs that demand the listener’s attention.

Eccentric frontman Paul Killengray’s peculiarly distinctive vocals drive the music into unexplored tumultuous landscapes, with guitarist Ross Davies and bassist Rob Good harnessing this sound into a palpable explosive energy. Horns feature from Terry Edwards (Gallon Drunk, Pj Harvey, Bad Seed, Lydia Lunch, Tom Waits) and strings are added intermittently throughout the record adding layers of depth.

Covid nearly finished Dead Patrons before they had even started. The nation was thrown into lockdown the very same weekend the band were set to play their first ever gig. Instead of putting their music plans on ice, the band thought “fuck it”, and recorded a full album’s worth of material.
