Poolblood and the beautiful melancholia and reflections of "my little room"

"I've been waiting a quarter of a century and now I'm living in the memory..."

I am a sucker for urgent acoustic guitar, scattered piano notes and the beauty of somber reflective personal lyrics. On "my little room" by Poolblood the musical monker of Toronto's Maryam Said, you get all that and a lot more I love the constant pushing rhythms that create a nervous, angsty youthful energy set against the utterly measured falling drawn out lyrics. Maryam's vocal aesthetic here while melancholy, feels self assured, drawing inward. Like a reflective pool she can only see, it feels like we are secretly privy to her innermost emotions. The quiver in her voice also holds the lyrical pointed arrows emotionally weighted as chamber pop orchestrations flow in.

Press notes share that Said was "raised in a religious household at arm’s length from popular music, they nonetheless found themselves drawn in by the music of Yusuf Islam (Cat Stevens), who left an indelible imprint on Said’s relationship to music and songwriting" which made me instantly happy because I love his songwriting.

"my little room" is from Poolblood's upcoming debut LP "mole", out January 13, 2023 via Next Door Records. Via Press Notes: Full of stories about deep and abiding intimacies, both romantic and platonic, "mole" is lush and dense and beautiful at one turn, and sparse and tender and revelatory in others. The album is full of collaborators, with Louie Short and Shamir co-producing the album with Said, with other musicians like Christian Lee Hutson, Eliza Niemi, Dorothea Paas, and more filtering in and out of each song.

I look so forward to diving in.

Poolblood, the musical nom-de-plume of Toronto’s Maryam Said, is an ethereal spirit of punk rock, swirling and dancing in the air with a collection of gorgeously orchestrated bedroom pop music. Raised in a religious household at arm’s length from popular music, they nonetheless found themselves drawn in by the music of Yusuf Islam (Cat Stevens), who left an indelible imprint on Said’s relationship to music and songwriting.

The results of their upbringing–time spent practicing chords in guitar class, learning about hardcore from friends after school and honing their songwriting as an early teen–is a winding path of melody, making stops along the way to dabble in everything from noise rock to lush and gorgeous pop hooks.

Drawing inspiration from wide array of artists; Fiona Apple, Nick Drake, Ichiko Aoba, Yuck, Title Fight, The Apples In Stereo, Mitski, Deftones and every stop in between, Poolblood is a pastiche of genres and styles working in blended harmony. In Poolblood’s voice, stunning and comforting and vital as it is, we live in ease, a calming presence laid over a lifeline of fiendishly brilliant structures of songwriting. Poolblood is here as a halcyon guide through a world of their own creation, lush and dense and beautiful at one turn, sparse and tender and revelatory in others.
