Sun Streak and the rear view synth pop navigation of 'Swerve'

"Driving backwards in a cul-de-sac / How can we get anywhere going in circles? / Your hand reaches for the back of my neck / You laugh a little, and I scrape the curb..."

The nervous rear view mirror drive of 'Swerve' by Sun Streak, the Toronto synth pop duo of Autumn Easterbrook and Melanie Sarazin feels like 80's sunshine, a much needed burst of retro goodness. From the pair's Ep called, well, "EP, is a pitch perfect distillation of bouncy post punk, new wave styles and what makes it so smile inducing besides it's fun addictive nature is the smart lyrics (metaphorical or not).

Sun Streak paint such an inviting story and share:

"Swerve is a song about the difficulties of navigating a queer relationship with someone who is not out. Getting mixed signals from someone who insists that she is straight, but who’s actions with you prove otherwise. The car is the vehicle for describing these feelings, in a nod to Gary Numan."

There is a proto punkian attitude here, acerbic, sideways that makes me think of iconic new wave stalwarts like The Waitresses, like Human Sexual Response, B-52's and coupled with such a perfectly rendered amalgam of 80's artists like Depeche Mode, the aforementioned Gary Numan, Haircut 100 and others it just takes you back. This is not to say that there is anything copy cat going on here, there is not but Autumn and Melanie sonically capture from top to bottom that post punk / new wave nucleic acid.

Check out "EP", you will not be disappointed.
